Battle in the Woods. 1944

Taken from the RF Arnhem supplement & condensed a little for an 8x4 table..

Ian, Gruf Jhig & my self over a couple of Thursday evenings.

Ian & gruf handled the Paras while John & I 'controlled' the Germans.

Looking north from the Koppel
Image

German troops deployed in depth. Figures and Guns from Hohnn's collection most of the vehicles are mine.

Here they come... 156 Para on the British left. 10 Para are seen extreme left of picture.
Image

156 Para make contact and quickly isolate the 2 companies of KG Bruhns
Image
Image

A detachment of 9 SS Recce moves up. Finding that the Sdkfz250/9 hadn't made the trip a n Sdkfz250 & 5 figures were slotted in.
Image

156 Para overwhelms the forward postions covering their advance.
Image

10 Para advance in classic British Infantry style 2 up.
Image

9SS Recce thicken the firing line against 10 Para only to be outflanked by 156 Paras bold thrust along the road.

Part2

The German front line facing 10 Para. The terrain tile we used had a small hill toward the left edge of the table. This allowed 10 para to advance in dead ground and out flant the foremost German positions.
Image
Image

156 Para assault the SP 2 cm and 9SS APC. Rubbish German dice luck made these actions one sided affairs. A 6pdr moved in through dead ground is crash actioned & destroys the Armoured car.
Image
Image
Image

The British advance allows German off table artillery to come into play - The lead element of 156 pay a heavy price for its impetuosity. The troops outflanking the forward line endured mortar fire as well.
Image

10 Para breaks cover, again skillful use of dead ground minimises casualties but 10 Para does not quite get away unscathed
Image
Image

Brigade HQ follows 156 Prara while the OP team hitches a ride in a Carrier. Bad mistake
Image

High angle shots summarizing the end of the 1st session. Both sides have haken casualies and 156Para & KG Bruhns are testing morale. (Both passing the brits because they are elite and the Germand as they re in hard cover. Both need those modifiers.

Part3 Session 2

Different perspect on these shots as Gareth had the Camera.

10 Para make a flank run overrunning a KG Bruhn position which had promised a great field of fire but failed to deliver. They are now well placed to push for the Koppell
Image

ispite casualties 156 Para keep up the monenteum of their attack and more of KG Bruhns falls back in an attempt to avoid being isolated and destroyed in detail
Image
Image
Image

KG Alworden hold the hedgeline at the base of the Koppel. and is drawn into a firefight with 10 Para.
Image

Right across the frony the Paras dish out kills Bruhn's passes 3 consequetive tests before the pressure eases for a turn.
Image
Image

The Tiny KG Alworden is soon testing. The figure in the background are German casulaties :( The Brish piles are little better. :?
Image

Wil the Alworden elememts on the Koppel eliminated by 10 Para a company is detailed to sieze the objective
Image

Beyond, the OP team dashes for the bus & departs to fight another day the lone survisior of KG Bruhns surrenders by consent.
Image

All in all an enjoyable game littered with silly errpors & unfortunate dice rolls on both sides (1 or 2 or observation and 5 or 6 for movement penalties) but a clear British victory.

I'd surrender too if the big giant hand descended from the sky to grab me!

Great looking game Dave and the photos capture the claustrophobic intensity of combat on that sort of terrain.
